Better Work Culture


Today marks the resumption of work for many after the festive holidays. We miss the holidays already but we all know that it cannot be holiday forever. Rest is actually sweet after work. So, welcome back to work. I hope you rested well and you are ready for another year of “please find attached” and “kind regards”.

While many will prefer to just have money without work (we are many on this table), the reality is that many will have to work for their money. Even trust fund babies work. It is not uncommon for people to complain about their work. I totally understand that many have toxic work environment with bosses putting them down verbally and in some cases we have heard of physical abuse at work place. To all those persons who work in toxic environments, I honestly pray and wish you better employment opportunities. No amount of money can compensate for a toxic working environment because such environment messes with one’s mental and physical health.

This post is to encourage everyone to be true and sincere to their jobs as much as possible. My point is not for you to be slaves to your job or to allow your job to suck out life out of you but be true to the job you are being paid for. Be true to the hours you have agreed to put in. Deliver the quality of work you have agreed to give to clients. Add that value you promised your interviewer you were going to add to the job to the extent possible. Inasmuch as you expect to be paid for your work, you have to ensure that you justify that pay. While some people are working very hard, some persons are just giving the job their barest minimum which in turn increases the burden on other persons. My point is that because you are not doing your job well, someone else is being forced to put in more hours to sort your mess and cover up for you and this is simply unfair.

As much as possible, do not view your job or work as a burden because such perspective will affect your attitude to the job. Try to be happy at what you do. Your mediocre attitude at work is the reason someone else’s mental health is deteriorating. I understand that sometimes we need to learn on the job, ensure that you are actually learning. From time to time, measure your development at work. Compare the way you handled tasks in past years to how how you are handling similar tasks in recent times. You cannot continue to hide under the umbrella of “I am still learning” forever. Develop yourself at work and outside work. Take those classes, courses and employ other tools that can aid your development and make you better at the job. Above all, rest as much as you can. Your job is not your life, it is only a part of it. Relax with friends, discuss your problems with persons and you will be surprised to realise that your problem is not peculiar to you. Get mentors who can help you and guide you in life.
